Hey there.  This is the first in what I hope is a continuing series of articles about new big bands that I discover as I listen to music on Spotify.

This edition features a group I just found this week… The Tyler Mire Big Band, based out of Nashville (yes, really), Tennessee.

This is a big band that you should hear.

Tyler Mire is a recent graduate of the University of North Texas (Bachelor of Music 2010, Masters of Music 2012), where he studied under the tutelage of Jay Saunders, Akira Sato, and Rich DeRosa and spent two years in the six time Grammy nominated One O’Clock Lab Band (appearing on “Lab 2010″ and“Lab 2012″ ) as the second and then lead trumpet player (from Tyler’s bio on his website).

The Tyler Mire Big Band had its start in Dallas, TX where the band’s debut album, “Enter the Atmosph-Mire” was released in 2013 to high acclaim.

Now the Tyler Mire Big Band has a new home in Nashville, TN the “Music City.” Assembling a band of Nashville’s finest jazz and session musicians, Mire has been infused with a new creative spirit. The compositions of his band range from straight ahead swing, groovin’ funk, ethereal modern jazz, and blistering latin. Mire’s influences include Thad Jones, Rich DeRosa, Alan Baylock, Sammy Nestico, John Clayton and others.

Their latest release from June, 2015, is “Movin’ Day“, which features some of the best musicians from the Nashville area.  The album consists of 10 songs, and I am pretty sure that 8 of those are original compositions by Mire.

The sound from this group is rich, full of sound from the high to the low end, and their execution of the music is precise and right on.  Mr. Mire has a thing for word puns in the song titles, which shows itself in songs like “Call Me, MirEby” from “Movin’ Day” and “C’mire” and “Mire-ly a Minor Blues” on “Enter the Atmosph-Mire”

I really enjoyed listening to this album, and I am looking forward to hearing “Enter the Atmosph-Mire”.  There were some toe-tapping numbers, as well as a ballad or two.  All were arranged in a well-balanced way.  I love it when I listen to a big band and I can hear all the sections.  Sometimes the middle of the sound gets kind of muddled with a big band, but not with this one.

I do want to alert you to one musical surprise on the first cut… “New Nashville“.  Be sure to listen to the whole recording.  I had to keep from laughing out loud at my 8-5 job in Cubicleville.
